Leading with Safety, Skill, and Standards

Dan Hook, CBS Field Services, NETA PresidentColumns, President's Desk, Summer 2025 Columns

As we turn the page into summer, this issue of NETA World brings together timely insights and timeless principles that define our profession. It’s an edition that challenges us to think critically about how we work — and why we do what we do.

I’m proud to highlight four powerful articles that speak to the core of our mission.

“Electrical Infrastructure Investment and Growth” takes a broad view, highlighting the incredible opportunities ahead. With increased investment in the nation’s power grid and energy systems, the need for reliable, skilled professionals has never been higher. This is our time to lead, bringing not only technical skill, but also a commitment to standards and safety that’s second to none.

“The Three Pillars” serves as a strong reminder that Safety, Quality, and Productivity are not individual checkboxes but rather a unified framework. Excellence in our industry isn’t just about meeting targets — it’s about doing so with integrity and intention. When we hold all three pillars in balance, we elevate our work and protect our people.

In “Building an Electrical Safety Conscientious Confidence Through NFPA 70E,” the focus shifts to the mindset and knowledge behind safety. NFPA 70E provides more than just rules — it offers a way to build true, informed confidence on the job. That kind of confidence saves lives and empowers teams to make smart, situational decisions in the field.

Finally, “Electrical Safety: The Troubleshooting Process and Staying Alive” brings it all home. Troubleshooting is at the heart of what many of us do — and it’s one of the most dangerous tasks if not approached with care, training, and vigilance. This article is a sobering but vital reminder that safety must never take a back seat, especially when under pressure to solve problems quickly.

Together, these articles reinforce what we already know: Our work is critical, our responsibilities are great, and our standards must remain uncompromising. As always, I’m inspired by the dedication and excellence of the NETA community. Let’s keep raising the bar — together.

Sincerely,

Dan Hook, President
