Electrical industry standards are built by experienced professionals who share their knowledge, review proposed changes, and work together to improve safety, reliability, and system performance. NETA is proud to be part of that process.
Through its Technical Representation Steering Committee (TRSC), NETA participates in the development of standards, codes, and recommended practices that affect electrical testing, maintenance, commissioning, and workplace safety. This involvement helps strengthen ANSI/NETA standards while supporting consistency across the electrical power industry.
WHY IT MATTERS
ANSI/NETA standards are used alongside documents developed by organizations such as NFPA, IEEE, CSA, ASTM, NECA, and NERC. Together, these standards establish the requirements for:
- Electrical safety
- Equipment maintenance
- Test methods
- Equipment application
- Installation practices
- System reliability
- Competency and field evaluation
By participating in these organizations, NETA brings practical field experience into the standards-development process while staying informed about changes that affect the electrical testing industry.
TECHNICAL REPRESENTATION STEERING COMMITTEE
NETA’s Technical Representation Steering Committee coordinates the association’s participation on external committees and code panels. The committee identifies priority activities, tracks standards development, and supports NETA representatives serving on technical committees.
The objective is simple: Contribute practical field knowledge that helps improve the standards used throughout the industry.
CURRENT AREAS OF PARTICIPATION
NETA maintains active representation on committees whose work directly affects electrical testing, maintenance, and safety, including:
- ASTM F18; Electrical Protective Equipment
- CSA Z462; Workplace Electrical Safety
- CSA Z463; Maintenance of Electrical Systems
- IEEE C37; Switchgear
- IEEE C57; Transformers
- IEEE 400 Series; Medium-Voltage Cables
- IEEE P902; Maintenance and Operational Safety
- NECA
- NFPA 70B; Electrical Equipment Maintenance
- NFPA 70E; Electrical Safety in the Workplace
- NFPA 790; Competency of Third-Party Field Evaluation Bodies
- NFPA 791; Evaluation of Unlabeled Electrical Equipment
NETA also follows other high-impact standards affecting protective relaying, healthcare facilities, distributed energy resources, transformers, overcurrent protection, emergency power systems, grounding, commissioning, and the National Electrical Code.
SUPPORTING BETTER STANDARDS
Participating in standards development helps keep electrical maintenance, testing, installation, and safety requirements aligned across the industry. That leads to:
- Better consistency between standards
- Clearer expectations for owners and operators
- Stronger maintenance and testing programs
- Better integration of safety and reliability
- More effective use of ANSI/NETA standards
As electrical power systems continue to change, coordination among standards organizations becomes increasingly important.
